Family Camping

Family camping at Camp Harmison, WV has been a tradition at St. Matthews for over 30 years.  The camp is located near Berkley Springs, WV and is about 2.5 hours from Bowie.  All members are welcome and we even have families who have moved to other places come for the weekends.

The camp can accommodate RVs, motor homes, and tents.  Hookups are available when needed, and there is a sewage dump tank.  The camp has an all-electric kitchen with two refrigerators and four electric ranges, and a covered pavilion with fireplace comes in handy for the times of inclement weather.

The weekends are unstructured allowing campers time for reading, visiting with fellow campers, playing games, walking the trails, bird watching, or taking mid-afternoon naps.  There is a traditional pot luck supper on Saturday night when campers can share their favorite foods with each other.  It is really amazing how the mountain air, combined with increased physical activity, can affect appetites!

The Spring trip is planned for the Memorial Day weekend.  There is a parade in Berkley Springs on Saturday morning if one is inclined to arise somewhat early to go to town.  The Cacapon State Park also opens that weekend if one is tempted to go swimming in a mountain lake or hike the trails.  The park is about 20 miles from Camp Harmison, and also offers golf and horseback riding.

The Fall trip is planned for Columbus Day weekend.  The Apple Butter Festival in Berkley Springs is the same weekend.

The fees change from year to year, as most things do, to account for increased expenses in maintaining the camp.  They generally amount to about $5 per person per night for tents with no hookups to about $25 per night for a hookup site.
